How much does a drop of water cost? Just one life.
Today, we learned about Rotary’s “Safe Water, Save Lives” project that is active in many third-world countries. The project began out of Australia and you can see a working example of the equipment here:
The idea is simple; dirty water goes in the tan tank and then filters through the solar cells and the condensation comes out in the black tanks as clean water. A kit like this can make about 4 liters of water a day depending on the strength of the sun. In places like Africa, that isn’t a very big problem.
The entire system was built and designed by an Australian Rotary crew and has now been successfully installed in dozens of countries around the world. And, when it gets dirty or scale builds up…a solution of lemon and lime juice is all that’s needed to keep it clean and running requiring no chemicals. Some water facts the next time you take a drink:
• More than 5,000 children around the world die every day from diarrhoeal diseases caused by unsafe water and a lack of sanitation facilities.
• More than 125 million children under age five live in households without access to a clean water source, and more than 280 million lack adequate sanitation facilities.
• Women and children in developing countries often spend as many as six hours each day travelling to retrieve water for their families, a task that adversely affects their health and prevents them from pursuing an education.
