Bob the Railway Dog died in 1895 and is part of South Australian Railways folklore. Peterborough served as the railway hub for South Australia and Bob spent his days living off the land and riding the railroad trains from town to town.
The city celebrated his legacy by placing a bronze statue of him in the town center, near the old railroad station. It didn’t take long for the locals to poke a little fun at themselves and let their personalities shine. Apparently, around a number of major holidays (e.g. Australia Day, etc.) people have been known to sneak over in the middle of the night and decorate him. During the rest of the year, it is not uncommon for an some of the locals to anonymously leave a bowl of dog food or a pile of bones for him.
Well, we couldn’t let these stories go without adding a little folklore ourselves. In the middle of the night, possibly after many drinks at the pub, the team organized a mission. We raided our luggage and the local Salvation Army in an attempt to find a little red, white and blue.
Success. Bob never looked so good.
